Video Editing Software
Video editing software is used on non-linear video editing in which the footage is removed or scenes added by cutting and pasting techniques. The original footage is not damaged in any way because first it is recorded and stored on a disc or on the computer hard drive, then the editor works with the recorded version to make the changes. The software is such that an editor can take pieces of several videos and combine them to make a completely new video.
In the simplest case, the video is stored as a JPEG file in a directory. The software will show one image of each of the images stored in the directory. The editor can zoom out, so that a video files takes up a small portion of the screen in the cutting process. A play button will advance the software to the next image so that the editor can play the video as slowly or as quickly as he/she wants. He/She can also rotate the images 90º left or right or turn them upside down. When multiple images are selected for editing with the software, the process is similar to a slide show. Some of the software available also allows for limited editing of audio clips.
The most commonly used video editing software is:
- Media 100
- Lightworks
- Sony Vegas
- Avid
- Adobe Premiere
- Ulead Video Studio
- Final Cut Pro (Apple)
- iMovie (Apple)
Since this is the common method of editing films and movies, there are many computers with specialised video editing cards installed so that they will work perfectly with the software available.
